EP56: The San Diego Throat Slasher
Serial Killer David Allen Lucas
From May 1979 to November 1984, there were six unsolved throat-slashing killings in the San Diego area. The police arrested a man and while he was in jail awaiting his trial, the throat slasher struck again. However, this victim, who was left for dead on the side of the road, survived her injuries and was able to help authorities capture the real killer. David Allen Lucas and end his throat-slashing spree.
On May 4, 1979, Michael and Suzanne Jacobs lived in a small white wood-frame house in the eastern end of San Diego, California, with their three-year-old son, Colin, and their two dogs. That day, Michael and Suzanne were expecting the delivery of a new dinette set.
Michael awoke that morning and started his normal workday routine. He left the house at 6:00 a.m. and drove away in the family car.
Margaret Harris, a neighbor, and friend who lived across the street from the Jacob’s house, didn’t see Suzanne outside her house as she usually did every morning. Suzanne, who was 31, liked to garden in the morning while Colin rode his tricycle around the driveway. Instead, she had seen a maroon or wine-colored sports car with a black top parked in the Jacobses’ driveway between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m.
Michael returned home from work at around 5. He was immediately puzzled by the discovery of their new dinette furniture on the front porch. Suzanne was supposed to be home to make sure they receive the shipment. Confused, Michael entered the house and the first thing he noticed was blood all over the bathroom. As he backed out of the bathroom, he saw his 3-year-old son Colin lying dead on the bedroom floor.
Michael ran out of the house and called out across the street to Margaret and her husband Ed, who happened to be outside. Michael was in a state of shock, he couldn’t talk and collapsed on the ground. The Harris’ went into the Jacobs home to see what was going on. They discovered Colin’s body just inside the entrance of the master bedroom and Suzanne’s body further inside the master bedroom. Mrs. Harris called the police.
Suzanne and Colin’s murders turned into a cold case. Years went by with no one charged for the murders.
David Allen Lucas Continues Killing
The San Diego throat slasher continued his crime spree for the next five years. By the time David Allen Lucas was caught he had almost decapitated five more people.
